“There were once two friends”
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
Lyrics: Tassos Leivaditis
Arrangement: Simone Mongelli, Bodyterranean troupe
Testo greco – Traduzione in inglese/traduzione in italiano:
C’erano una volta due amici
che sembravano entrambi arcangeli
e dalle labbra delle ragazze
coglievano i fiori.
in dodici villaggi.
E quando la patria issò
le sue bandiere,
entrambi, per amore della speranza,
furono uccisi sulle montagne.
=================
The song is our tribute to the legacy of great and beloved Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, a few years after his passing. It was published on what would have been his 101st birthday, July 29, 2026.
We chose this particular song for our tribute because of its connection with the Palestinian cause.
In 1981 Mikis Theodorakis met in Greece with Yasser Arafat, then leader of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), who asked him to compose a song for the Palestinian cause, with the idea of making it the official national anthem of a future Palestinian state.
In 1982 Mikis Theodorakis travelled to Beirut (Lebanon) to present this song, which was met with great enthusiasm by the leaders of the PLO.
Like the great composer, we stand with the Palestinian people in their fight for freedom and self-determination.
We stand for peace and justice and against occupation, genocide and impunity.
We stand with International Law.
Greek lyrics – English translation:
There used to be two friends
who both looked like archangels
and from the lips of the girls
used to harvest the blossom.
Such braveness was never seen again.
With their dreams, they would buld up castles
in twelve villages.
And when the homeland raised
its flags wide open,
both of them for the sake of hope
were killed on the mountains.
But every night standing tall by the cliffside,
with their death they build up castles
as archangels again.
